Hurricane Harvey - Helpful Social Stories for Children and People with Autism and Special Needs by Carol Gray



In response to the challenges facing South Texas and Louisiana in wake of Hurricane Harvey, Carol Gray was asked to customize several of her Social Stories to support children and people with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and special needs.

The Future Horizons family sends our thoughts of hope and support for the victims of Hurricane Harvey. Below are several hand-picked Social Stories from Carol Grey's book, slightly modified to support the issues of flood, evacuation, travel and disruption.







  • Social Stories provides an enhanced method of communication for children with special needs on the autism spectrum.
  • A Social Story may demonstrate to a preschooler how each word represents a category of meaning(s), or help an elementary student identify contextual cues to determine his or her own more effective response(s).
  • Social Articles, written for adolescents, adults, or those with more advanced academic skills, address concepts and personal traits, like stereotypes, white lies, and perseverance.
  • A Social Story accurately describes a context, skill, achievement, or concept according to educational defined criteria. These criteria guide Story research, development, and implementation to ensure an overall patient and supportive quality, and a format, 'voice', content, and learning experience that is descriptive, meaningful, respectful, and physically, socially, and emotionally safe for the Story audience (a child, adolescent, or adult).

Coping with TragedyWhat is a Tragedy?
Iintroduces and defines key vocabulary, like tragedy and survivor, explains the events surrounding a tragedy, describes efforts to assist survivors, and encourages the audience to ask questions of trusted adults.

Tragedies on Television
Watching a Tragedy on Television clarifies the confusing aspects of watching a newscast about a disaster on television.  It reassures children throughout, opening with a news bulletin that interrupts regular programming.  The Story covers several concepts, including but definitely not limited to: the distinction between what is happening on the screen versus the safety of home; how a single event may appear on television for many days (making it seem like a tragedy is reoccurring); and how a family’s typical routine usually resumes shortly, with the example of eating dinner.  The Story closes with mention of efforts to help survivors. 

Safety Wherever I Go
Safety Wherever I Go (two versions - girl and boy) uses simple text and large illustrations to identify safety measures in several areas, including the physical environment  (rails, gates, doors and locks), safety equipment (helmets, life jackets, seat belts), signs, and more.   The repetitive format builds predictability into the content, reinforcing the reassuring message.
