The Way I See It

Dr. Temple Grandin has served as inspiration and role model to hundreds of thousands of families and persons with autism. In this unique presentation, Temple eloquently and candidly describes the challenges she has faced and offers no-nonsense ideas on how others dealing with autism can meet these obstacles and improve the quality of their lives. Backed by her personal experience and evidence-based research, Temple shares her valuable insights on a wide variety of topics, and offers useful do’s and don’ts.

By attending, participants can:

  • Create a learning environment to accommodate sensory challenges
  • Distinguish between voluntary behaviors and involuntary behaviors
  • Define ways of intervention for those newly diagnosed
  • Relate methods to help the older child and Adult form social relationships

Beth Aune, OTR/L, has developed and presented numerous workshops for parents and educators that focus on the care and treatment of children with disabilities. She most recently authored Behavior Solutions for the Home & Community. She also co-authored the popular Behavior Solutions In & Beyond the Inclusive Classroom series.

  • Identify ways to accommodate learning differences in an inclusive classroom
  • Interpret behavior as communication of sensory needs, social/emotional needs and physical needs

Managing Anxiety and Frustration in Children, Teens, and Caregivers

Dr. Jed Baker is the director of the Social Skills Training Project, an organization serving individuals with autism and related social communication problems. He is on the professional advisory board of Autism Today, ASPEN, ANSWER, YAI, the Kelberman Center and several other autism organizations. In addition, he writes, lectures, and provides training internationally on the topic of social skills training and managing challenging behaviors. He is an award winning author of 8 books, including Social Skills Training for Children and Adolescents with Asperger's Syndrome and Social Communication Problems; Preparing for Life: The Complete Handbook for the Transition to Adulthood for Those with Autism and Asperger's Syndrome; The Social Skills Picture Book; The Social Skills Picture Book for High School and Beyond; No More Meltdowns: Positive Strategies for Managing and Preventing Out-of-Control Behavior; No More Victims: Protecting those with Autism from Cyber Bullying, Internet Predators & Scams; Overcoming Anxiety in Children and Teens; and School Shadow Guidelines. His work has also been featured on ABC World News, Nightline, Fox News, the CBS Early Show, and the Discovery Health Channel.

 

By attending, participants can:

  • Propose how best to think about challenging behaviors to insure better outcomes 
  • Explore methods to  discover triggers for fear and frustration
  • Assess effective prevention plans to prevent debilitating anxiety and frustration.
  • Review practical treatment of anxiety: modify triggers, understand alarm system, motivate participation, think like a scientist, create fear ladders, exercise, meditation, and biological interventions
